Interventions of Neurodegeneration on Patients' Cognition, Behavior, and Memory and Caretakers

Abstract

The study of neurodegeneration is rapidly advancing as new therapeutic approaches rise to prominence and researchers increasingly discuss the possibility of reversing or delaying the symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases. This paper examines six interconnected dimensions of cognitive decline, focusing on how brain atrophy affects the behavior and memory of patients and how caretakers respond to these changes. The review finds that stress and cognitive decline exert a reciprocal influence on one another: stress can induce hippocampal degradation and neuronal loss through cortisol pathways, while neurodegeneration can cause depression in approximately 58% of patients who receive an early diagnosis. Social isolation is also identified as a significant contributor to brain atrophy, with studies showing that individuals who maintain active social lives are better able to preserve cognitive homeostasis through greater neurological resistance. The paper further examines caregiver mental health outcomes, resilience factors among patients, and the role of support groups in sustaining both patients and families. Collectively, the evidence underscores that neurodegeneration extends its consequences well beyond the patient, affecting the fundamental human capacities of memory and autonomous thought, and making the pursuit of effective treatments an issue of both medical and ethical urgency.
